Alternator Warranty Reference

Parts warranty by brand, labor warranty by shop type, factory bumper-to-bumper coverage, extended-warranty plans, and credit-card extensions consolidated into a single reference. Read closely: most parts warranties cover the part only, not the labor to remove and reinstall it.

Factory Warranty Coverage

Bumper-to-Bumper
Typically 3 yr / 36,000 mi (Hyundai and Kia: 5 yr / 60k). Covers alternator replacement at zero cost when failure happens within the period. Use the dealer.
Powertrain Warranty
Typically 5 yr / 60,000 mi to 10 yr / 100k mi. Does NOT cover the alternator on most manufacturers because the alternator is treated as an electrical accessory, not part of the powertrain. Read the specific exclusion list for your vehicle.
Field 11d / Extended

Extended Warranty and Alternator

  • Comprehensive / exclusionary plans: alternator typically covered.
  • Stated-component plans: only covered if the alternator is on the listed parts schedule. Read the contract.
  • Powertrain-only plans: alternator NOT covered.
  • Wear-and-tear exclusions: some plans deny claims when the alternator failure is attributed to brush wear. Brush wear is the normal end-of-life mode, so this is a meaningful exclusion.

Major plans to check terms on: Endurance, CARCHEX, CarShield, AAA, manufacturer-branded (Ford ESP, GMPP, Mopar Vehicle Protection, Toyota TVPP).

Field 11e / Parts-Only Trap

The Parts-Only Warranty Trap

Most parts warranties cover only the alternator itself, not the labor to remove and reinstall it. If a remanufactured alternator fails at month 11, you get a free replacement part but pay $150 to $300 in fresh labor. Factor this in when comparing a $180 reman with a 1-year parts warranty against a $260 new unit with a 2-year warranty: the spread can flip on a single early failure.

Field 11g / Claim

How to File a Claim

  1. Parts warranty: bring the failed alternator and original receipt to the retailer where you bought it. They will exchange or refund.
  2. Shop labor warranty: contact the shop that did the original work. Most shops will redo the work at no charge if the part fails inside the window.
  3. Factory warranty: take the vehicle to any authorised dealer of the brand. They diagnose and replace at no cost if covered.
  4. Extended warranty: call the plan administrator before authorising work. They will assign a claim number and approve a shop. Do not pay out of pocket and try to be reimbursed; many plans deny those claims.
  5. Credit-card warranty: call the card’s benefits line within the timeframe (usually 60 days of failure). Provide receipt, statement, and manufacturer warranty terms. Reimbursement only.
